Marshall Construction Sustainability

Our approach to sustainability is to comply with our environmental policy that is accredited to ISO 14001:2015. We embrace the 2008 Government strategy for sustainability targets within the Construction Industry including Sustainability in the design and designing the built environment to comply with the principles of economic, social and environmental sustainability. We are familiar with BREEAM, CEEQUAL and the Code for Sustainable Homes to evaluate a new buildings sustainability performance.

Our approach to sustainability is defined through our action in the following areas;

marshalls sustainability

Materials

It is our policy to influence the selection of materials at design stage by adopting the principles of responsible sourcing. We will work with our designers to assist in the process of specifying and sourcing materials taking into account environmental and social impacts by giving consideration to the following;

  • Using sustainably sourced materials and provide evidence in the form of Chain of Custody Verification including FSC / PEFC Timber.
  • Using locally sourced materials to reduce transport emissions
  • Using materials manufactured with a high recycle content.
  • Using materials that can be subject to end of life recycling.
  • Using materials that are manufactured in ways that result in reduced carbon emissions.
  • Designing for recycled content.
  • Using materials that have been subject to Life Cycle Analysis to identify, quantify and evaluate the environmental impacts of the product.
  • Using products that limit the use of hazardous substances in their manufacture.
  • Complying with BS EN 15804 which is the standard that provides core product category rules for all construction products and services.
  • Comply with WRAP’s resource energy programme to promote resource efficiency.

Energy

We have significant experience in the use of renewable energy, including:

  • Wind turbines
  • Heat recovery systems
  • Solar & PV panels
  • Rain water harvesting
  • Air Tightness
  • Grass Roofs

Environmental

We understand the key environmental impacts of our business and have put in place processes to minimise and manage them. These measures include our accreditation to ISO 14001:2004 which drives our commitment to the environment with the production of Site Impact registers on all our projects. The production of Site Waste Management plans in conjunction with Zero Waste Scotland who undertook a pilot scheme on a recent project generating measurable savings on material and transportation costs. We operate an Integrated Management System to ensure that environmental management is integrated with all existing policies on quality, Health & Safety and all parts of our business management. We also operate a waste transfer depot where we recycle material for reuse.

We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint, running our business in a sustainable and responsible manner. We recently received accreditation from the Carbon Trust and have embarked on a series of energy saving initiatives in our offices and site accommodation, including additional insulation and controls on the lighting installation. We were the first contractor in Scotland to gain this accreditation.

Transport

We have developed a Carbon Plan and the key element of this is the reduction of CO2 emissions. We have implemented a fuel management systems within our vast fleet of vehicles and this has positively impacted on the fuel usage. A policy to replace our fleet with low emission vehicles has been deployed and when vehicles are replaced the emphasis and choice of replacement will be driven by consideration on emissions.

Net Zero

Marshall Construction has partnered up with Net Zero International to meet our legal obligations to be Net Zero by the year 2050 and is now starting to measure our carbon footprint and implement plans to meet this target. As the months and years progress we will be looking to implement new procedures and adapt new ways of working, as technologies emerge and progress to help us meet our strategic goals.
This will be a slow process but the company is committed to helping the environment and persuading our supply chain to also become more carbon aware and join us on the journey to Net Zero as it will be a legal obligation for all businesses.
We have completed the report of our activities for the Reporting Period August 2022 – July 2023 using the Operational Control Approach.
Emissions from Scope 1 and 2 have been measured along with certain Scope 3 emissions. The Scope 3 emissions that have been included are those that have been practical to measure with available data, which are as follows:
Transmission and Distribution of Electricity
Water Supply and Treatment
This is the first time the company has measured and reported on its carbon emissions and therefore this is the benchmark year, i.e. from August 2022 – July 2023.
